EMDR Consultations for Clinicians

What Is EMDR Consultation?

EMDR consultation is a collaborative process where an EMDRIA Approved Consultant™ supports mental health professionals who have completed an EMDRIA™ approved EMDR basic training, in developing and refining their EMDR therapy skills. Whether you’re working toward EMDR certification or looking for case-specific guidance, consultation provides structured, professional support to help you grow in confidence and competence.

This process is consultee-centered focusing on deepening your understanding and application of standard EMDR therapy with clients, helping you navigate complex cases, troubleshoot challenges, and integrate EMDR more effectively into your clinical work.

How Consultation Can Help You

EMDR consultation is designed to enhance both your clinical skills and your professional development, ensuring you provide the best possible care to your clients.

You can expect to:

  • Build confidence in your use of EMDR with diverse client presentations
  • Receive supportive feedback on your case conceptualization and interventions
  • Deepen your understanding of EMDR protocols and procedures
  • Develop strategies for working with blocked processing or challenging client dynamics
  • Work toward EMDRIA Certified Therapist™ status or receive eligible consulation-of-consulation hours to apply for the EMDRIA Approved Consultant™ credential.
  • Review ethical considerations and best practices in EMDR therapy so that your practice aligns with EMDRIA standards
  • Become proficient in implementing the eight phase protocol, three-pronged approach of standard EMDR therapy

Whether you’re newly trained or seasoned in the modality, consultation offers a space for growth, clarity, and connection.

What to Expect in EMDR Consultation

Consultations are available in both individual and group formats and are structured around your learning goals. You are encouraged to bring client cases, video or audio recordings to your individual consultations (as appropriate), transcripts, or EMDR case presentation forms for discussion. Sessions are confidential, collaborative, focused, and tailored to your developmental needs.

You’ll be invited to reflect on your use of standard EMDR therapy, explore decision-making processes, and ask questions in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. The aim is to strengthen your clinical judgment and comfort with EMDR so you can provide effective care to your clients.

Note: Consultation is not clinical supervision; consultees are fully responsible and independent for making decisions about their clients’ treatment. The emphasis of consultation is on the skills and knowledge of the consultees in applying standard EMDR therapy.
